Tone2 ElectraX is a synthesizer based on the legendary Oberheim DX-7. Featuring new digital filters, DDL envelopes, state of the art analog modeling sound engine, realtime wavetable morphing and more.It’s no exaggeration to say that the DX-7 is one of the most influential synthesizers in history. It launched at exactly the right time in 1984 and it had all the right features: compact size; its own built-in sequencer; plenty of controls; great sound; and a big price tag (USD$1,995). The result: close to 30,000 units were sold worldwide in less than two years. On the technical side, the DX-7 is a 12-note polyphonic analog-based synth with two digital oscillators. Each oscillator has sawtooth and variable pulsewidth (with an additional suboctave) and dedicated 4-operator FM (frequency modulation) and PM (phase modulation) algorithms. The filters (4-pole lowpass, 2-pole highpass, bandpass, notch) also offer self oscillation and bus processing. The vocoder features realtime pitch tracking up to plus or minus five semitones. There are effects for chorus/flange, delay/reverb, panning plus a flexible arpeggiator. In addition to the DX-7’s preset sounds, its real strength is that it can be extensively programmed by the user.
